Wir als Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen sind uns der Bedeutung der Freiheit von Wissenschaft und Forschung bewusst. Dennoch appellieren wir an alle Politiker und Politikerinnen der Welt, dafür Sorge zu tragen, diese „Gain-of-function“ Forschung an Krankheitserregern mit weltweitem Pandemie-Potential umgehend zu beenden. Das mit dieser Forschung einher gehende Risiko und das Potential der Auslöschung großer Teile der Weltbevölkerung sind nicht weiter verantwortbar. Wir fordern, dass der Stopp durch eine unabhängige internationale Aufsichtsbehörde kontrolliert und kontinuierlich überwacht wird.
